IMPORTANT
Paul's First Journey requires one meg to run.
In order to run Paul's First Journey you must place two files
in the "libs" drawer of your bootup disk. These two files are:
"ilbm.library"
"requester.library"
To run from a hard drive just place the above two files in the
"libs drawer of DH0: and put all other files in a sub directory of
your choice.
How to play an adventure game
In an adventure game you are transported to a world far
different from your own where you must match your wits and
ingenuity against the many obstacles and puzzles that you will
encounter. You control the movements of a character (in this case
it is Paul of Tarsus) by giving him commands which you type in at
the keyboard of your computer. Paul will try to obey your commands
- within reason that is. If you tell him to "kick the roman guard"
he may not want to do that. However, if you tell him to "enter the
synagogue" he will probably obey you.
You enter commands at the "What now" prompt on the computer
screen. You may type anything you want but your character has only
a limited understanding so he may tell you he is not sure what you
mean. If this happens feel free to try something else to
accomplish your purpose. If you get bogged down in one place move
on to another and come back later when you may have a better idea.
Some example commands would be:
"fill the chalice with water"
"put the chalice in the pouch"
"look in the pouch"
After you type in your command hit the return key to execute it.
You can join commands with the word "then" for example:
"pick up the rock then put the rock in the pouch" or
"drop the ring then leave the temple"
Do not use any punctuation such as periods or commas in your
commands. This will only confuse Paul. It does not matter if you
use capital letters or lower case letters.
There are many abbreviations which make typing commands
easier. For instance to go north you could type "go north" or
simply type "n". To go south use "s", for east, "e", and for west
"w". Or to make it even quicker you can just hit one of the cursor
keys which points in the direction you want to go. You may also
go "down" or "up" in certain places. Use "enter" or "leave" to go
in and out of various places. Another helpful abbreviation is "i"
for "inventory". This command will list all the objects you are
presently carrying. There are other quick commands that can be
used with the function keys. For a description of these type
"help" at the "what now" prompt during the game. If you forget
where you are type "look" and a description of the current location
will be printed.
Background to Paul's Journey
Paul's first missionary journey is described in the Bible in
the book of Acts, chapters 13 and 14. Though it is not necessary
a quick reading of these chapters will give you an overview of your
objective and perhaps some hints for the game play.
There are ten cities and over 160 locations in this adventure.
The design of the cities in this game incorporated many of the
latest findings in archaeology to make the game play quite
authentic. The result is that in many cases you will be exploring
the same streets and countryside that Paul would have done himself.
You will also be using the same currency that Paul would have used.
Your objective is to travel around the Mediterranean sea area
and preach the gospel in the various cities just as Paul did. Paul
would usually go to the synagogues and preach. It would not hurt
if you preached to the various people you met on the way. You
have many enemies however. You must beware of the Pharisees -
those experts in Jewish laws and customs who often oppose your
message with great zeal. By the way... your character, Paul, was
once a Pharisee. You must also be careful not to start riots.
These can be hazardous to your health but sometimes they cannot be
avoided. You should also beware of things like evil sorcerers,
heathen temples and such things. Also remember that you are a
representative of God himself so act accordingly. It may help you
complete your mission or even save your life.
